  1. Genius for Windows Version 1.4

  4. Recommended computer configuration
  5. ----------------------------------

  7. 386 or better computer with at least 2 Mb of memory
  8. Windows version 3.1 or higher running in Enhanced mode.
  9. Enough hard disk space to store your files
  10. (1 Mb stores about 2000 entries not including any notes)
  11. and up to 900Kb for the program.
  12. The Font "Arial" installed in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM sub directory.
  13. (this is normally installed automatically when you install Windows 3.1+)
  14.  
  15. If you have unzipped the file GENIUS14.ZIP, you will also need the file
  16. VBRUN300.DLL installed in the sub directory \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
  17. This can be obtained from your local BBS, shareware supplier, Compuserve, 
  18. the Internet etc.

  20. Before installation you should have the files:

  37.     vsview.vb_
  38.     ctl3d.dl_
  39.     mlist.vb_
  40.     ver.dl_
  41.     ddeml.dl_
  42.     genius_d.dl_
  43.     genius_s.dl_
  44.      whatsnew.wr_
  45.       vbrun300.dl_     (this file is included on the distribution disk only, 
  46.                         it is not included in the compressed version 
  47.                         GENIUS14.ZIP

  49. Installation
  50. ------------

  52. Place the Genius distribution disk in your floppy drive. In Windows Program
  53. Manager select 'File' on the Menu bar at the top with your mouse then select
  54. 'Run' on the pop down menu and type:
  55.  
  56.     A:SETUP    
  57. and press [Enter]
  58. (You can use upper or lower case, it doesn't matter.)
  59. or, if you put the disk in drive B: then type  B:SETUP  and press [Enter]
  60.  
  61. After a few moments of disk drive activity you will be asked where you wish to
  62. install Genius on your hard disk.
  63. It offers to install Genius on Drive C: in a directory called  'GENIUS'.
  64. If you are happy with the suggested directory press 'Enter' or select the
  65. 'Continue' button, otherwise type in the name of the directory that you want
  66. Genius to be installed to.
  67. Genius will then be installed on the specified directory. An extra
  68. sub directory will be made called 'FILES' under your GENIUS directory, this
  69. is to store the family records that Genius will generate.
  70.  
  71. After a short time, the installation will be complete, and, if there are
  72. no existing data files, you will be asked if you wish to install
  73. the sample files. Respond either 'Yes' or 'No'. If you respond 'Yes' a set
  74. of sample family files will be copied to the 'FILES' sub directory,
  75. if you respond 'No' the installation is complete and you will be returned
  76. to Windows Program Manager.

  78. If the installation program finds an existing set if Genius Family files
  79. it will check and update these files.
  80. After installation you should have the following files in your Genius
  81. directory:   (or the sub directory you installed Genius to)    
  82.  
  83.     genius.exe
  84.     genius.hlp
  85.     readme.wri
  86.     register.exe
  87.     register.wri
  88.     whatsnew.wri
  89.  
  90. and, if you installed the sample family files you should have the following
  91. files in the 'FILES' sub directory under the Genius directory:
  92. (or under the directory you installed Genius to)
  93.  
  94.     genius.cfg
  95.     genius.per
  96.     genius.mar
  97.     genius.mce
  98.     genius.not
  99.  
  100. NOTE: If you installed the sample files you will have to delete them before you
  101. start your own family database.
  102. To do this exit from Genius, run File Manager, find the sub directory 'FILES'
  103. under the directory you installed Genius to (normally C:\GENIUS) and delete
  104. all the files listed above from the sub directory  'FILES'.

  106. After you have installed Genius for Windows click in the icon README.WRI in the 
  107. Genius for Windows group for more information about using the program.
